Our exquisite suites are located in a wonderful –and deeply scenic– area, in the central part of Santorini, 3.3 kilometers southeast of Fira: in the awe-inspiring Vothonas. The traditional settlement offers a quiet destination, in stark-contrast with the noisy, hyper-touristic areas of the island, and is characterized by unmatched scenery.
A spot of tranquility, away from the crowds, in a part of the island where the visitor feels truly embraced by the Theran land. The champion-in-undercut-houses settlement of Santorini looks –and is– sculpted from the volcanic rocks of its namesake canyon, which constitutes Vothonas’s backbone. Its unique architecture, preferred by its residents for protection against earthquakes and the weather, grips the visitor and, combined with the indescribable natural splendor, fills the air with a feeling of spiritual calmness and privacy.
The village is close to a supermarket, and has easy access to stores and restaurants. There are many noteworthy undercut churches, like Saint Roussos, built entirely out of pumice stone, as well as the only undercut museum in Greece, eight meters below ground and in the shape of a labyrinth, that displays the rich history of wine and the Santorini winemaker’s life all the way back to the distant 1660.
Even if –as a choice! – it remains outside the radar of tourist frenzy that dominates the island, Vothonas is a must-visit destination, a well-hidden treasure at the heart of Santorini.
